STUDENT ACTIVISTS LAUNCHES ENVIRONMENTALCONGRESS

The Environmental Advocacy Students Collective (EASC), a network in the NCR with about 42 student environmental groups, has successfully launched the first NCR Ecology Caucus held last October 23-26, 1996 at the Human Resource Development Training Center (HRD), DENR, Visayas Avenue, Quezon City.

Elected regional officers were: Dennis Decano (Ateneo), president; Gigi Cruz (Haribon-UST), internal vice president; Marichu Mambong (Earthsavers-PUP), external vice president; Fannie Grace Borja (PLM), secretary; Michelle Nocom (Envisoc-St. Scholastica); Rommel Ortega (Haribon-UST), auditor; and Greg Bituin Jr. (KAMALAYAN and YEU-FEATI), logistics officer. Maria Theresa Dyhan (St. Paul's College-Manila) was appointed assistant secretary during their first post-congress meet.

Aside from Dennis, Gigi, Fannie and Greg who were in the pre-congress secretariat, the others who were in the congress preparatory committee were: Allan Tristan Escaño (KAWAL-PCU), Rowena Marin (GREEN-PCBA), Ickx Tan (PUP), Roy Cabonegro (De La Salle), Johnny Liboon II (KAWAL-PCU), and Rommel Arriola (GREEN-PSBA).

For these young activists, once they harnessed student power for the cause of the environment, much can be achieved. Their vision is a rejuvenated student sector participating in all relevant levels of policy and decision making towards a more ecologically sustainable future. EASC's guiding principle are sustainable development, proactive and positive student activism, active non-violence and environmentalism as a way of life.

FEATINEAN EDITOR ATTENDS ECO-JOURN SEMINAR

In the joint observance of the World Environment Month and Philippine Independence Day, the Earthsavers Movement, in cooperation with the United Nations Information Center (UNIC), the Inter-Agency Committee on Climate Change, DECS and DENR, sponsored a "National Tri-Media Workshop / Seminar for Professional and Campus Editors" last June 13-14, 1995 at the Bureau of Soils and Water Management Auditorium at Diliman, QC.

The seminar focused on discussions about climate change, ozone layer depletion, biodiversity, marine and coastal pollution from land based activities, and ecoscience journalism. About 200 delegates from different schools and universities, as well as those working in the media profession, attended the affair.

Greg Bituin Jr., features and literary editor of The Featinean, attended the two-day activity. According to him, "Most of the speakers focused more on the effects of environmental degradation, about what science and technology can do to save the environment, and how, we as writer, can use eco-journalism to help save the environment. What they did not tackle were the causes of environmental destruction. And this is a challenge for us as writers."

He further added, "I believe that environmental destruction results from an economic system where the conditions of the majority of the people are determined by production for profits. That system is capitalism. For the capitalist, the cheaper the production process, the more money he makes. That's why they don't introduce environmental safeguards, even though technology already exists to prevent or reduce pollution and other hazards. For the capitalist, buying this environmental equipments will reduce profits. Therefore, we can say that the law of profit doesn't care for the laws of nature. I didn't wonder why they didn't tackle it. Maybe because some of theme are involved in environmental destruction such as illegal logging."

Sen. Heherson T. Alvarez, founding chairman of the Earthsavers, gave the closing remarks.
